P51 Hits Mountain Above Ojai

I don't know the details of this wreck, but I believe that it crashed sometime during 1944 while on a training mission. The wreck is located below the lookout tower on Nordhoff Peak in the Los Padres National Forest. There is evidence that the plane was partially salvaged. The crash site is covered over with thick brush and it is difficult to traverse the steep hillside.

WRECK SITE VISITED

In early 1996, after about an hour long hike, we finally made it to the P51 crash site.

We found a landing wheel door that was surprisingly intact

Below the main impact point we found remains of the Merlin engine. The engine we found was manufactured by GM's "Buick" division as evidenced by the name embossed into the engine block.
