P38 Crash Lands East of Grey Butte Aux Landing Field

SHERIFF'S OFFICE, LOS ANGELES COUNTY - COMPLAINT REPORT

Date:January 1, 1945

Informant: Operator Garvin, Civil Air Authority, Palmdale Airport, Palmdale

Victim: UNKNOWN, US Army Air Corps

Location: 237th St. East and Avenue S, Black Butte District (east of Lake Los Angeles)

At scene interviewed Capt. Don Morley, of Van Nuys Air Base, who was in charge of the wreckage, stated that a P38 number unknown from Van Nuys Air Base had crashed demolishing and burning plane. Body of pilot had been removed to mortician at Victorville at request of Army authorities prior to our arrival..

WRECK SITE VISITED


We located the remnants of the crashed P-38 in the desert east of Avenue S


We found several engine pieces, parts of instruments and recovered numerous 50 cal. bullets.

We also found armored glass, pieces of the cockpit and a Lockheed serial number plate from the plane.
