This one was simple "SLAMIT DAMN IT".
It is a very long term project progressing only when money is plentiful
and "Don" isn't about to get married. It started with a mondo stereo job,
now gone. Then on to a "C notch" of the rear end to allow it to get real
low using air shocks. But that wasn't low enough so now the big surgery,
the "body drop".
The interior and bed were removed, the front wheel wells cut away and
most importantly, the entire floor of the cab was cut out in one big piece!
Then with great care the team of Pat, Jaime, and an assortment of others
drafted for the job, welded the floor back into the cab only this time
4 inches over its old altitude. This would allow the cab to be remounted
to the frame 4 inches closer to the road and still allowing for some realistic
frame height over the road.
With the floor 4 inches up from where is used to be, the pedals didn't
work so well, so new mounts for the brake and clutch had to be fabricated,
then the gas pedal modified and the shift lever reworked. All of this meant
the dashboard had to be removed and modified and reinstalled.
After all of this the truck is finally low enough, but it drags its
belly on the ground so it needs hydraulics to get it up far enough to navigate
speed bumps and crosswalk lines.
A special hydraulic kit has been acquired but parts are missing so
now we wait. But when that is up and working a new bed will replace the
existing bed that is just not enough metal to hold itself together.
The Slammer has been sold and passed around a few times but is still
in the Palmdale area.
